Hexahedron Collection: #1 Mmmm Puzzle

2008

For the 2008 Christmas presents Jürg played around with the idea of the Acrylic split cube construction, as a mix of the cube construction used in puzzles such as the Swiss Cube and the US Cube and special split design he devised earlier for a Scent Box. The particular split design allows the construction of a simple box - where the lid has to be lifted up and can't easily fall off to the left or right of the box (without the need for an inner lip keeping the lid on).

The box itself is obviously not a puzzle so it needs a puzzle as a content. There are many cube puzzles which can fit inside, and so we decided to start to explore a series of such puzzles to give to family and friends as gifts and thank you's.

Our first puzzle in the series is the Mmmm puzzle designed by Hirokazu Iwasawa in 2004. It is this puzzle’s design, 4 simple pieces with an AHA effect when you finally get all of them into the box, that makes it one of Karin and Jürg’s favorites.

Special thanks go to Iwasawa-san for his permission to reproduce the design.

A total of 50 copies in three versions were made:

  1. The XMas version:
15 copies with the pieces having XMas symbols lasered into them.

  2. The Thank You version:
18 copies with the pieces having "Thank You" in 12 languages engraved.

  3. The Generic version:
The rest of the puzzles have pieces with no special adornment.
